WILLISTON – There was just enough for Minot over Jamestown.
Minot advanced to the Class A West Region baseball championship with a semifinal win Friday over Jamestown 4-2 at Williston State College’s Phil Rabon Field.
Teegan Strand (5-1) pitched a three-hitter, struck out six and retired 11 straight hitters in one stretch as Minot (21-6) advanced to the Class A state tournament for the second straight year.
Ethan Oettle gave Jamestown (16-10) a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the top of the second inning.
Oettle was also pivotal in the play that gave the Magicians the lead in the bottom of the same inning. Tre Stewart hit a hard shot to deep second base. Oettle, who was just a little off-balance, delivered a throw that just pulled first baseman Bennett Goehner off the bag. The error allowed Aiden Diehl and Drew Jordan to score. Minot led 3-1 after a wild pitch scored Tegan Schindler.
Easton Pansuk widened the Minot lead to 4-1 with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
The Blue Jays produced their other run in the sixth inning. Cody Busch led the inning off with a double and was advanced to third with a ground ball. He then scored on a wild pitch.
Oettle and Thomas Newman made excellent defensive plays and Brenner Weber threw out two runners attempting to steal.
Derek Hatlewick (3-4) pitched a four-hitter for Jamestown, but also walked six.
Jamestown will have another shot at a state tournament berth on Saturday against Williston in a state qualifier. Coverage will begin Saturday at 11:45 AM on The Voice of the Blue Jays, Jamestown 107.1.
