FARGO (NewsDakota)- When Calleigh Hewitt launched a two-run home run in the top of the first inning to give Carrington the early lead, the runs marked the first state tournament runs in program history.
After that, it was the Bottineau Stars who made the rest of the history.
Nine runs in the first two innings lifted the Stars to their first-ever State Tournament victory in a 12-2, five inning decision over the Carrington Cardinals on Friday afternoon in a Class B Consolation Semifinal at Tharaldson Park at NDSU.
Bottineau went to work early on freshman Maara Kutz, scoring twice in the bottom of the first before second baseman Kamryn Allard launched a two-run shot to dead center for a 4-2 lead and the Stars were on their way to a six-run first.
Bottineau added three in the second, one in the fourth, and two in the fifth to finish off the win.
Carrington will play May Port-CG/Hatton-Northwood for seventh place on Saturday morning with coverage on KDAK The Cardinal beginning at 10AM.
