VALLEY CITY, N.D. — Jamestown 6, Oakes 5

Oakes Post 36 came up just short in a tightly contested 7-6 loss to Jamestown during Saturday’s consolation round of the Valley City Mid-Summer Classic.

Jamestown jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a three-run blast from catcher Cody Busch. Oakes responded with a run in the bottom half and kept the game close thanks to a gritty outing from Jace Fyre, who pitched six strong innings and allowed just five runs — only two of which came after the opening frame.

After chipping away all game, Oakes took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth. But the seventh inning proved costly. Oakes issued five walks, allowing Jamestown to score the tying and go-ahead runs without recording a hit.

Oakes threatened again in the bottom of the seventh, putting the leadoff man aboard with a double. However, the runner was thrown out trying to steal third, and a strikeout followed by a groundout ended the game with Jamestown holding on for the 7-6 win.

Valley City 6, Lisbon 5 (Walk-Off Win)

In the other consolation semifinal, Valley City Post 60 overcame a rough fourth inning to walk off Lisbon Post 7, 6-5.

Bryson Heck gave the Royals an early lead with a solo home run in the third and tossed three shutout innings to open the game. But Lisbon stormed back in the fourth with a leadoff triple and a series of bloop singles, capped by a two-out, bases-clearing double from Jacob Lyons to take a 4-1 lead.

Valley City responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and tied the game in the fifth. Heck bounced back to throw three more scoreless innings, striking out two in the seventh to give the Royals a chance to win it in the final frame.

Corbyn Powell led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple. Lisbon intentionally walked Trevor Fetsch and Jack Samuelson to load the bases, but the game ended in anticlimactic fashion when a wild pitch allowed Powell to trot home from third for the walk-off win.
