VALLEY CITY, N.D. — Valley City Post 60 rode dominant starting pitching to a sweep of the Williston Oilers on Friday, winning 9-1 and 5-1 in a doubleheader at Charlie Brown Field.
In Game 1, Bryson Heck was nearly untouchable, striking out 13 batters across seven innings while allowing just one run on three hits and two walks. The Royals supported him with a steady offensive effort, scoring in five of their six innings at the plate.
James Schwehr led the way with three RBIs, while Jack Samuelson added an RBI double that narrowly missed leaving the yard. Corbyn Powell and Trevor Fetsch each collected two hits at the top of the order, helping Valley City build an early lead and pull away with a four-run sixth inning to cap the 9-1 victory.
Game 2 saw more brilliance on the mound, this time from Luke Praska, who fanned 16 Oilers in six innings of work. He surrendered just one run and limited Williston’s chances throughout the game. The Royals got on the board early with a three-run first inning, then added two more in the fourth on timely hitting from Samuelson, who picked up another RBI double.
Despite leaving 11 runners on base, Valley City’s pitching and defense held firm. Corbyn Powell closed out the game with two strikeouts in the seventh before Andrew Sykora made a sharp play at first base to seal the 5-1 win and complete the sweep.
Up Next: Post 60 will hit the road on Monday, June 23, for a matchup against the Casselton Haymakers.
