VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The City of Valley City has approved the removal of two existing water storage facilities: the standpipe located at 12th Street NW and 5th Avenue NW, and the water tower located at 9th Street NW and 5th Avenue NW. These facilities will be replaced by a new water tower to be constructed at the 12th Street NW and 5th Avenue NW location.

Moore Engineering Senior Project Manager Tracy D. Eslinger said this new tower, along with other planned water system improvements, will streamline the City’s water distribution zones, reduce operational and maintenance costs, improve water pressure in historically low-pressure areas, and expand overall water service coverage and availability.

The preliminary estimated cost of the project is $3.75 million. The City has applied for a cost-share through the North Dakota Department of Water Resources to cover 60% of the eligible project costs—approximately $2.25 million—and has already secured funding for preliminary design services.

Eslinger said the existing water standpipe has a leaking concrete foundation and recurring joint leaks that result in significant annual water loss and costly repairs. Similarly, the existing water tower at 9th Street NW and 5th Avenue NW requires repairs and ongoing maintenance that will no longer be necessary once the new improvements are completed.

In addition, the city is evaluating the removal of the National Guard Water Tower near 7th Street SE and 7th Avenue SE. This tower has not been in service for several years and is no longer needed for the City’s water system. Its removal would eliminate future maintenance expenses.
