RICHLAND COUNTY, N.D. (Valley News Live) – Neighbors from a small Richland County town met in Fargo on Tuesday, July 1, to express their concerns about a proposed $90 million dairy farm.
Residents are worried that proposed manure lagoons at the Abercrombie Dairy could lead to contaminated water and put their communities at risk.
The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality approved the project near the beginning of the year, but residents who live close to the proposed dairy don’t feel it’s in the best interest of them or the environment.
Meanwhile, members of the Dakota Resource Council, whose mission is “to promote sustainable use of North Dakota’s natural resources and family-owned and operated agriculture,” say, “Despite clear evidence that the lagoons could leak up to 80 million gallons of contaminated water annually, no leak detection system is currently required.” They say, that raises serious red flags about the proposed project.
