WASHBURN (NewsDakota)- Coming into the 2025 season, Carrington football Head Coach Kyle Smith made no mistake that his defense would be ahead of the offense in the early going.
Turns out coaches know their teams pretty well.
The Cardinals only amassed 108 yards of offense as they fell to the Southern McLean Roughriders 14-0 on Friday night in Washburn. The Roughriders took the opening kick of the game from their own 26 and went on a 13 play, 74 yard, 7 minute 40 second touchdown drive, capped by a 28 yard pass from Joshua Lanning to Kaleb Benning for an early 8-0 lead.
Southern McLean would add to the lead two drives later as Lanning hit RB Ethan Retterath for a 10-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-0 in the second. But from there, the Roughriders had just ten yards the rest of the game, bringing their total to 142.
However, Carrington’s offense never got going behind QBs Parker Bickett and Max Whitman, who combined to go 4/17 for 36 yards and an interception in the game. Tate Wolsky had 36 rushing yards and 15 receiving yards in the game.
The Cardinals return to play Friday night in Gwinner against Sargent County with coverage on KDAK The Cardinal beginning at 6pm.
