VALLEY CITY, ND (NewsDakota.com) Despite the Vikings showing a step up in a handful of categories, Dickinson State held them scoreless after halftime, while their standout receiver helped grind out a 30-15 win over the Vikings in Dickinson Thursday.
Semaj Clark grabbed a diving catch for a third-quarter score, then hauled in another deep ball over the middle to push the Bluehawks to the Viking 11 on the next drive. Dickinson State scored two plays later to extend a 17-15 halftime lead to the final result.
Viking transfer quarterback Joey Cave showed real potential in the loss. His dual-threat capability, at one point, led to 77 rushing yards before a pair of late sacks knocked the total to 59 on 15 carries. He also threw for 228 yards on 19-32 passing, including a 47-yard touchdown to Jake Deutsch, cutting a Bluehawk lead late in the opening half.
Deutsch led the Viking receiving corps with four catches for 80 years. Dom Sotomayor notched six catches for 74 yards, and Exavian Westbrook had three catches for 66 yards. A revamped offensive line stood up to the Dickinson State blitz until late in the game.
Clark finished with seven catches for 116 yards to lead Dickinson State.
The Vikings face Augsburg University Thursday night in Valley City.
