Elsie passed away peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2025, at Hatton Prairie Village in Hatton, N.D., with her daughter Shelly by her side.
Elsie was born March 8, 1933, in McIntosh County, N.D., to Albert and Emma (Heinrich) Bertsch. She was baptized on March 12, 1933, at Zion Lutheran Church No. 2 in rural McIntosh County and confirmed on July 6, 1947, at Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley, N.D. She attended country school in Beresina Township.
As a young woman, Elsie moved to Ellendale, where she worked at Hall’s Café. On June 8, 1952, she married Walter C. Schock at Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley. Their daughter, Shelly, was born in 1956. Together, they farmed west of Ellendale from 1953 until 1998, when they moved into town. In later years, Elsie lived in Ellendale, Cooperstown, and Hatton.
To help support the farm, Elsie worked at the Red Owl Grocery Store, Whalen’s Meat Market, and in the lunchrooms at the East and West Sales Barns.
Elsie was active in her community and her church, belonging to Zion Lutheran Church, Circle #3, a homemaker’s club, a bowling team, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Ellendale/Forbes Drill Team.
Her hobbies included gardening, quilting, embroidery, crocheting, crafting, and cooking. She loved to make floral arrangements, often winning ribbons at the Dickey County Fair. She enjoyed dancing, singing, entertaining, and collecting cups and saucers—amassing a collection of more than 1,000 sets. Elsie also took pride in helping with farm work, especially combining during harvest.
Family was at the center of her life. She cherished her granddaughter Taylor, sharing her love of cooking, baking, and crafts, and she treasured time spent with her great-grandson, Connor.
Elsie is survived by her daughter, Shelly (Jim) Zimprich; granddaughter, Taylor (Jacob); great-grandson, Connor; sister, Esther; brother, Leroy (Mary); sisters-in-law, Janice and Shari Bertsch; brother-in-law, John Weisser; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walt; her parents; an infant sister; brothers, Clifford and Delane; and several in-laws.
