WAHPETON – After a slow start, Jamestown Blue Jays Football, in the 2025 season opener, rallied in the second half behind a stout running game, a strong defense and a crucial special teams play.

Liam Frey rushed for 132 yards and two second half touchdowns Friday as Jamestown defeated Wahpeton 23-12 at Frank Vertin Field at Earl “Skip” Bute Alumni Stadium.

Frey scored a nine-yard touchdown with 8:40 left in the third quarter, ending a 40-yard drive which was set up by a nine-yard punt by Wahpeton.  A Chase Traut extra point gave the Blue Jays their first lead at 7-6.

At the end of Wahpeton’s next possession, Braden Hemminger blocked a punt deep in the Huskies’ end.  Frey then batted the ball toward the end zone, where Jaeger Roemmich recovered for a touchdown and Jamestown’s lead was 13-6.

Frey rushed for a three-yard score just over a minute into the fourth quarter for a 20-6 Jamestown advantage.

Wahpeton’s Treyton King threw his second touchdown pass of the game, a 36-yarder to Cooper Koolmo with 5:58 remaining and the Huskies were within 20-12.

Traut provided the final points with 58 seconds left with a 24-yard field goal.

King threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Brayden Steffens for a 6-0 Wahpeton lead in the first quarter.
