CASS COUNTY, N.D. – (CCSO) – The Cass County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) wishes to advise the public of a scam tactic resurfacing in the Fargo-Moorhead area. In this scheme, scammers are contacting family members of people who are currently incarcerated. The scammer falsely identifies as a deputy with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and, at times, will use a spoofed phone number that appears to come from a legitimate Cass County Sheriff’s Office line. This has caused significant concern to family members, particularly because their loved one is in custody.
The scammer claims that a nominal payment is required for “pre-trial release services” and pressures family members to provide money. It is believed the scammers are utilizing publicly available search platforms to identify incarcerated individuals and then exploiting that information to make their calls seem credible.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office does offer alternative corrections, including ankle bracelet monitoring and 24/7 monitoring programs. However, the public needs to know that payments for these programs are only accepted in cash or by money order and must be made in person at the Cass County Jail. At no time will a deputy from our office contact individuals and request payment for these services over the telephone.
If you receive one of these calls, hang up immediately. If you have questions, please contact the Community Service Unit at (701) 271-2909 | Monday – Friday | 07:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
CCSO Payment Methods Include:
- Ankle Bracelet: Cash or Money Order – In person at the Cass County Jail.
- 24/7 Program: Cash or Money Order – In person at the Cass County Jail.
