VALLEY CITY, N.D. — The Valley City Hi-Liners dropped to 0-2 on the season Friday after being shut out 34-0 by the Langdon-Edmore-Munich Cardinals.

The Hi-Liners defense gave Valley City early momentum, forcing a turnover on downs after Langdon’s opening possession stalled deep in Hi-Liner territory after Valley City’s first drive ended abruptly when the opening snap sailed over quarterback Andrew Sykora’s head.

Valley City found some success on the ground early behind running back Corbyn Powell, but the offense was unable to sustain drives due to errant snaps and negative plays.

Langdon struck on its next two possessions as senior quarterback Jax Johnson used both his arm and legs to put the Cardinals in front 13-0 at halftime. Johnson added another score on the opening drive of the second half to extend the lead to 19-0.

The Hi-Liners created an opportunity in the third quarter when their defense came up with an interception near midfield, but Langdon’s defense held firm and prevented Valley City from capitalizing. The Cardinals offense continued to roll, stretching the lead to 34-0 by the final whistle.

Valley City will host Sargent County in its home opener Friday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on 1490 AM/96.3 FM KOVC, streamed online at NewsDakota.com and on the KOVC Live YouTube channel.
