SIOUX FALLS, SD – It was the result many expected, but it was far from an embarrassment for Jamestown Jimmie Football.

In the Jimmies’ first game in the NSIC and as a member of NCAA Division II, two-time defending league champion Augustana controlled the game Saturday in a 37-7 win over Jamestown at Kirkeby-Over Stadium.

While the Vikings (2-0, 1-0 NSIC) were better in all phases, UJ (0-1, 0-1) didn’t turn the ball over, forced and recovered an Augustana fumble in the fourth quarter and scored their first points at their new level of football when Cole Hentges threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Nate Burke with 37 seconds remaining.

The fumble recovery was made early in the fourth quarter by Ryan Beems after Hershell Jefferson separated AU’s Levi Teetzel from the ball after Teetzel made a reception.

Otherwise, Augustana, who scored in the last minute to win their season opener, was dominant.

The Vikings drove 75 yards with the game’s first possession, ending the march with a 18-yard touchdown pass from Gunnar Hensley to Jaxon Haynes.  Augustana led 7-0 after one quarter.

Power running led the Vikings to their first two scores in the second quarter.  Tight end Marcus Parker, running from the wildcat formation, scored from three yards out 29 seconds into the quarter and from a yard with 5:21 to go.  That was the first of three scores in just over five minutes just before halftime.  Jake Pecina kicked a 22-yard field goal with 2:06 remaining, then Hensley connected with Haynes on a one-yard scoring pass with eight seconds left and Augustana led 30-0 at halftime.

Ryan Kenny gave Augie their final touchdown on a two-yard run with 8:38 remaining in the third quarter.

Hensley, who didn’t play after that score, was 21-of-27 for 255 yards and two touchdowns, but he was sacked once by the combination of Zack Mueller and Ethan Gall.  Haynes had eight catches for 93 yards.

Both Nick Martinez, who started, and Hentges played quarterback for the Jimmies.  Martinez was 9-of-23 for 56 yards.  Hentges, a transfer from UND, was 5-of-9 for 39 yards and also rushed for 34 yards.

Zach Hammett carried 14 times for 66 yards.  Erastus Antsino led UJ in receptions with five.

Jackson Walters had nine tackles (seven solo).  Jefferson tallied eight (six solo).

Jamestown will host Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday, September 13 in the Jimmies’ first home NSIC game at Rollie Greeno Field at Charlotte & Gordon Hansen Stadium.  Coverage will begin at 12:30 on the Voice of the Jimmies, Jamestown 107.1, with live and archived video on the NSIC Network.
