Mayville, ND (NewsDakota.com) – The Oakes Tornados entered Mayville as heavy favorites over May-Port-CG. They ended up barely sneaking out with a 21-18 win.
The game started with an opening drive touchdown for Oakes as they marched down the field ending with a 24 yard touchdown run by Andrew Rosendahl to make it 6-0 followed by a Beau Thorpe to Dahlstrom 2 point conversion to make it 8-0 with 8:32 left in the 1st quarter. They would trade possessions a couple times before David Bakke would pick off Conner Dockter and run it back to near the 15 yard line. Matvei Dimitrov would be the one to drive it into the endzone this time from 5 yards out to make it 15-0 which would hold till the end of the quarter.
The turning point of the game would be with 8:55 left in the half when Thorpe would target Brody Moore with a pass that would be tipped and picked off by Sawyer McGillis. The Patriots would march down the field where Dockter would punch it in from a yard out to make it 15-6. A couple plays later Rosendahl would fumble it where it would be recovered by Corbin Schriener. They would quickly march down the field and Dockter would connect with Noah Djibonon for a 15 yard touchdown pass to make it 15-12 going into the half.
The trenches would stall out in the 3rd quarter with the punters getting some reps in and some turnover on downs as well. The start of the 4th quarter would be the next turning point as the Oakes defensive line got to Dockter and forced a fumble deep in the May-Port territory with Max Cline falling on the ball at the 11. Oakes would get to the goal line where Thorpe would follow the offensive line into the endzone for the 1 yard td run giving Oakes a 21-12 lead with 10:51 left to go after the missed extra point. The ball would be given back and forth a couple more times before the Patriots put together a long drive down to inside the 5 before Dockter found Cross Kitchen on a crossing route in the endzone to make it 21-18 with 3:14 left as they would once again fail to convert the 2pt conversion. Oakes wouldn’t give the ball back for the rest of the game as they’d run out the clock winning the game 21-18.
Max Cline was named the Bank North Player of the Game.
