JAMESTOWN – Cole Hentges did what he could Saturday for Jamestown Jimmies Football.  But the Minnesota State Mavericks did what is expected of them.

Minnesota State ran up 549 yards of total offense in a 36-7 win over Jamestown Saturday at Rollie Greeno Field at Charlotte and Gordon Hansen Stadium.

Quarterback Maximus Sims accounted for 298 yards of offense for the Mavericks (3-1, 2-1 NSIC), ran for one touchdown and threw for another.  Mitchell Thompson also threw a touchdown pass.

TreShawn Watson, in the top five in Division II football in receiving yards, had five catches for 83 yards and a touchdown.  Sam Backer rushed 11 times for 87 yards and a score.

Hentges, starting at quarterback in place of the injured Nick Martinez for Jamestown (0-3, 0-3), rushed for 115 yards on 17 carries and had the only Jamestown touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Jamestown had chances to finish drives before then, but couldn’t.

After stopping MSU on their first possession, the Jimmies drove from their 42 to Minnesota State’s 17 before Hentges lost a fumble.  The Mavericks converted that into their first touchdown on a 46-yard run by Sims after a great fake pitch.  MSU led 6-0 with 7:40 left in the first quarter.

Connor Fournier extended the Minnesota State lead to 9-0 with the first of his three field goals from 24 yards with 7:58 left in the first half.

After a Jamestown punt, Watson caught his 25-yard scoring pass from Sims with 1:51 left in the half and MSU led 16-0.

Jamestown punted and Sims led Minnesota State from their 36 to the Jamestown 17 and Fournier hit a 35-yard field goal on the final play of the first half and the Mavericks led 19-0 at halftime.

Hershell Jefferson had his first interception in two years for the Jimmies early in the third quarter, but UJ missed on fourth down at the MSU 29 on the ensuing drive.  Backer scored from five yards to end a 71-yard drive for a 26-0 Minnesota State lead.

Thompson threw an eight-yard six-pointer to Hudson Dillon with 8:11 left for MSU.

Jamestown finally finished a drive just after that, going 59 yards and ending with Hentges’ six-yard touchdown run.

The Jimmies were limited to 259 yards of offense, though they had the ball just over 34 1/2 minutes.

Ryan Beams led Jamestown with six tackles.  Jefferson had five.

The Jimmies will play at Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday, September 27.  Coverage will begin at 11:30 AM on The Voice of the Jimmies, Jamestown 107.1.
