DEVILS LAKE – Liam Frey started well and ran well Friday, but it still wasn’t enough to break the losing streak for Jamestown Blue Jays Football.
Frey rushed for three touchdowns, but so did Bryar Exner for Devils Lake and Mason Palmer threw two touchdown passes to Max Palmer as the Firebirds outlasted the Blue Jays 41-27 in the 11AA West opener at Joe Roller Field.
Jamestown (1-4, 0-1 11AA West) lost for the fourth straight time.
Frey ran for a 55-yard touchdown one minute into the game and JHS scored first for the fourth consecutive game. But two and a half minutes later, Exner ran for the first of his two scores from 14 yards out for the Firebirds and the game was even at 7-7 after one quarter.
Devils Lake (4-1, 1-0) took their first lead with 9:27 left in the first half on the first touchdown pass from Mason to Max Palmer. Just over two minutes later, Frey ran for his second score but a missed extra point kept the lead for Devils Lake at 14-13 through halftime.
The Palmers connected again for a 16-yard score just over midway through the third and Devils Lake led 21-13. Later, Jamestown tied the game with 3:29 to go in the third. Karson Schmidt threw a one-yard touchdown pass to Cephy Sayler and the Jays hit the two-point conversion to tie the game at 21-21.
Then Exnar struck twice to give Devils Lake the lead for the duration. He scored from three yards out with 45 seconds left in the third quarter and the Firebirds led 28-21 through three. With 7:05 left in the game, Exnar scored from 45 yards and Devils Lake’s lead was 35-21.
Frey then scampered in on a 59-yard run with 6:23 left. A blocked extra point left Jamestown down 35-27.
Kade Fee clinched the game later in the fourth quarter for the Firebirds with a five-yard scoring run.
