
BISMARCK – Sharp play had Jamestown Blue Jay Volleyball thinking upset Thursday, especially after a sluggish start by Century. But the state’s top-ranked AA team then proved whey they are so.
Century rallied for a four-set win over Jamestown 14-25, 25-14, 25-23, 25-23 at Lisette Olson Gymnasium.
Sylvia Taylor smashed 24 kills and served an ace for Century (14-0, 8-0 WDA). Alexis Heinle scored 13 kills and three blocks for the Patriots, who had 10 total blocks.
Lucy Falk led Jamestown (8-6, 5-3) with 12 kills. She also had 12 digs and an ace. Mari Anderson had eight kills, three blocks and an ace. Amelia Newman registered seven kills and two blocks. Claire Marker had seven kills and four blocks. Hannah Attleson scored 22 set assists, three blocks, a kill and 11 digs. Jetta Peterson had 31 digs and three aces.
Jamestown came out well in the first set, but Century committed nine attack errors as the Blue Jays scored 20 of the last 25 points of the set. The Patriots lost a set for only the second time in their eight WDA matches.
The Blue Jays trailed 11-7 in the second set before Century had a 10-1 run for a 23-9 lead. Three Falk kills were included in a five-point run for Jamestown, but Taylor and Abby Fosland then killed for Century to even the match.
Marker and Newman each killed twice as the Jays took a 9-7 lead in the third set, but Century had a 6-1 run and a 15-13 lead sparked by three kills by Taylor and two aces by Heinle. Down 21-18, Jamestown scored four straight for a 22-21 lead, helped by a kill and an ace by Newman and a Haley Attleson kill. After a 23-23 tie, two Jamestown errors gave Century a set lead.
The Blue Jays grabbed a 17-13 lead in the fourth set, but Century scored 11 of the next 15 for 24-21 and match point. Jamestown saved two on kills by Anderson and Falk, but Heinle then ended the match with a block.
