HILLSBORO, N.D. — The Hillsboro/Central Valley Burros took advantage of five Valley City turnovers Friday night, handing the Hi-Liners a 28-0 defeat.

Both defenses controlled the opening quarter, but the Burros struck first with a long drive early in the second. Moments later, Hudson Kriewald was intercepted on third-and-long, setting up another HCV touchdown and a 14-0 lead.

Valley City nearly answered before halftime, driving to the Burros’ goal line with 20 seconds left in the half. But a fumble at the goal line was recovered by HCV, keeping the Hi-Liners off the scoreboard at the break.

The Hi-Liners’ defense forced a punt to open the second half, but the kick took a favorable bounce for HCV and pinned Valley City inside its own 10. On the next possession, a miscommunication between Kriewald and Derek Shape led to another interception, giving the Burros the ball at the Hi-Liners’ goal line. HCV scored on the next play to stretch the lead to 20-0.

Valley City moved the ball into Burros territory on multiple drives in the second half, but each ended with turnovers. HCV added one more touchdown late to seal the 28-0 victory.

The loss dropped Valley City to 2-4 on the season. The Hi-Liners will travel to face Ellendale/Edgeley/Kulm on Friday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on 1490 AM/96.3 FM KOVC and streamed on NewsDakota.com.
