VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NDSU Extension) – Barnes County 4-H volunteer Dawn Thomsen has been named the North Dakota 4-H Salute to Excellence Volunteer of the Year, honoring her outstanding leadership, creativity, and commitment to youth development.

Thomsen serves as the North Valley 4-H Club Leader, Treasurer of the Barnes County 4-H Leaders Council, and Public Relations Chair. Whether organizing major events such as Achievement Days, Communication Arts, or chaperoning Leadership Awareness Weekend (LAW), Thomsen’s enthusiasm and attention to detail help every event shine. She’s also known for capturing photos that celebrate 4-H members’ accomplishments and community spirit.

A lifelong 4-H’er herself, Thomsen’s dedication to the program continues through her family. Both of her daughters, Alyssa and Chesney, are active 4-H members, serving as North Dakota State 4-H Ambassadors. Her family’s ongoing service reflects the values she models daily — leadership, kindness, and a passion for helping youth succeed.

Thomsen is also known for instilling a spirit of service in others. Her 4-H club members participate in community projects such as ringing bells for the Salvation Army, hosting Valentine’s parties at the Sheyenne Care Center, and volunteering at the State Special Olympics. Her creativity and positive energy inspire those around her to make a difference.

“Dawn is the kind of volunteer who leads by example,” said Susan Milender, Barnes County Extension Agent. “She makes every 4-H’er feel supported, included, and valued. Her leadership has strengthened our program and inspired countless youth to serve their communities.”

The North Dakota 4-H Salute to Excellence Volunteer of the Year Award recognizes adult volunteers who demonstrate exemplary dedication, innovation, and impact within the 4-H program. Thomsen’s award highlights her commitment to the 4-H pledge — using her head for clearer thinking, heart for greater loyalty, hands for larger service, and health for better living.
