VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series Season 25 Presents: Gail Pederson “The U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps: Unsung WWII Heroines”. 7:00 PM Thursday, October 23rd, at the Barnes County Museum. (315 Central Ave N. Valley City, ND) Please note this is a change of date and topic previously announced.
The U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps, which was formed under the Bolton Nurse Practice Act in 1943, to support the war effort abroad and in our communities. Over 130,000 nurses were trained across the United States in more than 1,000 nursing schools until the program ended in 1948. These women have not been recognized for their service. Gail Pederson has taken this to the North Dakota Nurses Association, which has a legislative sponsor for a concurrent resolution to honor the service of these women during the next legislative session. Gail’s mother-in-law, Isabelle Bous Pederson, was a US Cadet Nurse who graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1948.
Gail Pederson is a lifelong resident of Valley City. She and husband Dennis reside on the family farm, south of Valley City, in Marsh Township. They have 3 grown sons and 7 grandchildren. Gail has been an RN for 45 years, currently working for the Sisters of Mary of the Presentation as their primary nurse. The Pedersons own Pederson Pottery, where they offer classes and group events, painting bisque ware, and sales of fine art and functional hand-thrown pottery.
