CARRINGTON (NewsDakota)- With two of the top three ranked teams in Class A meeting in Carrington for the only time in the regular season, it is reasonable to wonder if Thompson and Carrington will meet again with much more on the line.
But even if that happens, those matches will have some task in topping Tuesdays showdown.
The third ranked Cardinals rallied from a set down to beat #1 Thompson 3-2 (27-25, 22-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-3) in front of a boisterous crowd inside the East Gym on Tuesday night.
Thompson (20-4, 6-3) led the first set 22-16 before a rally on the serves of junior Journey Peltier and senior Lauren Hendrickson as the Cards (25-4, 9-0) took the opening set. But Thompson held off late charges in each of the next two sets and took the lead.
Enter Mya Neis.
The freshman did not play until the fourth set, then immediately contributed with four of her six kills as Carrington controlled the fourth set behind the hitting of Neis, Calleigh Hewitt, and Harper Kollman to force a fifth. And that momentum never wavered, as Kollman punished the Tommies with three straight kills to go with an Aniston Hoornaert ace to begin the fifth set as Carrington led 9-1 and easily disposed of the top-ranked Tommies 15-3 in the decider.
The Cardinals return to action on Monday night at home against Turtle Mountain with coverage on KDAK The Cardinal and KDAK The Cardinal on YouTube beginning at around 6:45pm.
