JAMESTOWN – Jamestown gave an inspired performance, but the visiting DII playoff contender had a little more.

Kyle Walljasper passed for four touchdowns and ran for another Saturday as 13th-ranked Minnesota Duluth defeated Jamestown 45-29 at Rollie Greeno Field at Charlotte & Gordon Hansen Stadium.  Jimmies quarterback Cole Hentges threw for career highs of 387 yards and four touchdowns in a game that produced 1,003 yards of total offense.

For Minnesota Duluth (8-1, 7-1 NSIC), the lead went their way for good on Walljasper’s second touchdown pass, an 11-yarder to DaShaun Ames with 33 seconds left in the first quarter to give the Bulldogs a 14-8 lead.  Ames made a remarkable catch on the play, outfighting Jimmies’ safety Kyle Williams for the ball in the right part of the end zone.

In the second quarter, Drew Henson kicked a 28-yard field goal for UMD and Walljasper threw an 18-yard score to tight end Luke Dehnicke, the second of his three touchdown receptions.  Minnesota Duluth led 24-8 at halftime and missed a chance to increase their lead when the Jimmies’ Tanner Chafee made an interception at his own three yard line just before the end of the second quarter.

UJ (1-7, 1-7) came within 10 with their first possession of the second half.  Hentges completed a 75-yard drive with a 14-yard scoring pass to Zach Hammett.

Walljasper and Dehnicke connected again for the Bulldogs from 27-yards out on the next series for a 31-14 lead.

Jamestown took just two plays to score with their next possession.  On the second, Hentges hit Nate Burke with a 79-yard touchdown pass and UJ was within 31-21.  Burke had a career-high 135 yards receiving on seven catches.

In the last minute of the third quarter, Minnesota Duluth scored again on a two-yard touchdown run by Walljasper.  The Bulldogs then led 45-21 with 6:01 remaining in the fourth quarter after an 11-yard scoring run by Francis O’Malley.

That was part of an impressing rushing attack by UMD, who ran for 320 yards.

Hentges found Erastus Antsino with a 38-yard touchdown pass with 3:19 to play, followed by a two-point conversion run by Gage Solano, and the Jimmies were within 16.  But UMD then recovered an onside kick and ran the clock out.

Minnesota Duluth scored on the game’s opening drive with Walljasper’s first touchdown pass to Dehnicke from 14 yards.  Dehnicke then ran in a two-point conversion for an 8-0 Bulldog lead.

The Jimmies then hit their first big play on their first possession, with Hentges connecting with Hunter Ruzicka on a 60-yard scoring pass.  Lukasz Andrews then caught a two-point pass to tie the game.

Walljasper was 16-of-24 passing for 235 yards with four touchdowns and rushed eight times for 61 yards and a score for UMD.  Freshman Zachary Welch rushed for a career-high 141 yards on 11 carries.  O’Malley had 19 carries for 103 yards and a touchdown.

Zach Mueller had 10 tackles for the Jamestown defense.

UJ will play at MSU Moorhead on Saturday, November 8.  Coverage will begin at 11:30 AM on The Voice of the Jimmies, Jamestown 107.1.
