VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Valley City was designated an American World War II Heritage City by the National Park Service in 2024. The recognition honors the contributions of cities, and their citizens who stepped up to support America’s war effort.

Project coordinator Mary Lee Nielson said thanks to the efforts of several volunteers including Lewis Legge who have been instrumental in setting up a trail of exhibits in Valley City that highlight the achievements made by community members during the war.

An open house at the Barnes County Museum will be held Thursday, November 20th from 5pm to 8:30pm with a program about our WWII Heritage City starting at 7pm.

One exhibit honors several nuns with the Presentation Sisters who were Prisoners of War (POW’s) in occupied France during World War II. Those women came back to Valley City to teach students at St. Catherine’s School.

Valley City is the only city in North Dakota to receive the honor of being named an American World War II Heritage City by the National Park Service.
