MAYVILLE (NewsDakota)- The Carrington volleyball programs’ second ever trip to the state tournament will have to wait.

May-Port CG rallied from a set down to win the Region 2A Final 3-1 (25-27, 25-16, 29-27, 25-17) to clinch their berth in next weeks Class A State Volleyball Tournament.

The Cards (31-5) were nervous-looking early, as they accumulated 26 errors in the match, but late first set hitting by Harper Kollman (16 kills) and Marah Johnson (14 kills) was enough for a first set win.

But the Patriots (29-7) came back strong with Paityn Strand (17 kills) leading a balanced effort which included only ten total hitting errors on the night.  The third set went to overtime and the Patriots used that momentum to easily win the fourth.

The Cardinals will now play in a state tournament qualifying match on Saturday against Valley City, who defeated Northern Cass on Thursday night at Harold Newman Arena with coverage on KDAK The Cardinal beginning at approximately 2:45pm.

Kadyn Mehring named Region 2 Coach of the Year.
