JAMESTOWN – For Allie Berns, this was quite a way to start.
Berns, a freshman, scored 28 points in her first college game as Jamestown Jimmies Women’s Basketball defeated Dickinson State in the season opener Friday 63-49 at Harold Newman Arena.
Berns scored her 28 points in 28 minutes and was 11-of-12 shooting with a three-pointer, three rebounds and a block. Her three was part of a 17-7 run that ended the first quarter, after which the Jimmies led the Blue Hawks 24-16.
Though UJ scored only eight points in the second quarter, they held DSU to just four as the Blue Hawks were just 1-of-9 shooting. Jamestown led 32-20 at halftime and maintained their double-digit lead through the second half.
Daviney Dreckman scored seven points with seven rebounds for Jamestown. Samantha Paulsen tallied six with six rebounds. Madelyn Malmgren had six points and eight rebounds.
The Jimmies shot 41 percent and the Blue Hawks were held to 29 percent shooting.
