BISMARCK (NewsDakota)- Consistency is hard to come by in sports, especially in the postseason. Just don’t tell the Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier Rebels that.
E/K/M scored eleven of the final fourteen points to overcome a fifth-set deficit and defeat the Our Redeemer’s Knights 3-2 (25-21, 24-26, 25-13, 18-25, 18-16) in the Class B Tournament third-place match on Saturday morning at the Bismarck Events Center.
The first twenty points of the match could not separate the teams, but the Rebels (28-12) pulled away on the hitting of Elli Lloyd and Betsy Huber and eventually won the set for an early lead. But the Knights (31-13) responded as Brooklyn Roedocker (23 kills) attacked repeatedly in the second set and with help from Noel Pankratz and Lauren Strom (12 kills each) the match was level.
In the third set, Huber’s defense took over, with six of her match-high thirteen blocks as E/K/M never trailed in the set. The fourth set began much like the first until Roedocker ran off an 8-0 run late to force a decisive fifth set, which the Rebels also faced on Friday.
Our Redeemer’s jumped out early in the fifth set with the serve of Ellie Streyle for an early lead that built all the way to 13-7. But Lloyd ran off seven straight service points and after an exchange of points forced overtime, Lloyd suffered a chipped tooth and bloody nose and would miss only one point. The decisive point came on an outstanding dig by Mazie Tjernlund that landed on the back row to clinch the match for the Rebels.
Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier finish 28-12, and on the note of consistency, they were the third-place team in the District 2 Tournament, the third-place team in the Region 1 Tournament and the third-place team at the Class B State Tournament. The program will say goodbye to a pair of outstanding seniors in Elli Lloyd and Alice Gackle.
