
VALLEY CITY, ND (NewsDakota.com) The Viking women defeated a team with national recognition, while the men had chances late against the sixth-ranked team in the nation.
WOMEN: VCSU 61, Montana Tech 58.
JayCee Richter tied the game with s three-point shot late, and the Vikings turned away two Tech possessions to make free throws by Tiyana Schwinghammer and Ellie Braaten stand up for the win.
Richter’s three tied the game at 58, Schwinghammer hit one of two twice and Braaten finished the scoring. The Vikings rallied from down six late after leading by eight at the half.
Schwinghammer led the Vikings with 14 points, and scored her 1,000th career point. Richter had 13.
The Vikings are now 5-2, 2-1 in league play. Tech was beaten for the first time, and falls to 5-1, 1-1 in league play.
MEN: Tech 73, VCSU 61
The Viking men used two three-point shots from freshman Joel Nelson to cut a 16-point deficit to eight and had chances to make it a two-score game, but could not edge closer as Tech held the Vikings, who scored 104 points the previous night, to just 33% shooting.
Nelson led the Vikings with 12 points. Kaleb Larson added 10, and Alex Lester scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds. The men fell to 4-3, 0-2 in the league.
The Vikings host Trinity Bible College Tuesday.
