JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Jamestown Dollars for Scholars announced a newly endowed scholarship that
will be awarded annually to a Jamestown High School or Jamestown-BJA (formerly Jamestown North) senior. The Ethan Igl Memorial Scholarship will annually award $1,000 to a student who plans to pursue post-secondary education in engineering, science or music.
The local chapter was presented with a $20,000 check from his parents, Larry and Amy. Family, friends and the community also contributed to this scholarship. His parents shared, “Ethan lived his high school years to the fullest. He loved learning, competing, making music, and building friendships. To honor his memory, we are establishing a scholarship that will help graduating seniors for many years to come.”
Ethan was a smart, athletic, musical and outgoing young man. He was involved in cross country, swimming and track and was selected team captain for both cross country and swimming. He loved playing trombone and piano and was active in high school jazz band and marching band. He was selected as drum major of the marching band in his junior year. He was a member of National Honor Society and the Science Olympiad team. Ethan was also a lifelong Boy Scout – starting in first grade and achieving the rank of Eagle Scout during his senior year of high school. Ethan graduated from Jamestown High School in 2023 and went to Iowa State University to study electrical engineering that fall. After an eight-month battle with cancer, he passed away on September 3, 2024, at the age of 19.
Accepting the scholarship on behalf of Jamestown Dollars for Scholars was DeAnn Ament, chapter president. She shared, “We are grateful for this generous gift from Ethan’s family and friends. Endowing a scholarship provides a lasting tribute to their much-loved son and brother and assists future high school graduates with their post-secondary education expenses.”
