CARRINGTON (NewsDakota)- The New Rockford-Sheyenne seniors had done almost everything in their high school athletic careers- two football state titles, a state basketball berth, state baseball berth, and set a ton of records along the way. But they had never beaten Carrington in boys basketball on varsity.
Until Tuesday night.
Easton Simon led the Rockets (4-1) with seventeen and the fifth-ranked team in Class B defeated the Cardinals 53-40 inside the East Gym in the 281 Classic on Tuesday night to end the Cardinals (3-6) two-game winning streak.
The first half featured seven ties and seven lead changes as the rivals never held more than a five point lead as Maddox McIlonie had seven points and Carrington took a 21-20 lead to the locker room.
But the second half began with an 11-0 run by the Rockets to open up a double-digit lead that they would not relinquish as Simon scored seven in the third and Easton Benz added ten of his fifteen after the break as New Rockford-Sheyenne never led by less than seven the rest of the way.
The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday in Hunter as part of a doubleheader at Northern Cass with coverage on KXGT Thunder Country 98.3 beginning at around 2:45pm.
