Oakes, ND (NewsDakota.com) – The Tornado boys basketball team and wrestling team picked up wins in their respective games in Barnes County. Boys Basketball went to Wimbeldon and picked up the 51-39 win to open District 1 play against Barnes County North while wrestling took down the Hi-Liners in Valley City by a score of 47-27.

Basketball

The Tornado boys started slow against the BCN Bison as they trailed early by a score of 7-2. They would take the lead before the end of the 1st however taking a 14-8 lead through the first. Beau Thorpe would then come alive in the 2nd getting 9 points in the quarter to help the Tornados get to a 29-14 lead as Jyles Meier picked up 5 blocks in the half to prevent BCN from doing anything on offense. The Bison came out firing early in the 3rd however as they’d score 10 straight points making it 29-24 before Oakes finally scored around 5 minutes into the quarter. The Tornados would maintain a 40-32 lead going into the 4th where they would lock it down to get a 51-39 victory.

The Tornados were led by Beau Thorpe with 19 (6/16 FG, 5/9 FT) on the night. He also led all-around scoring and was the Bank North Player of the Game. BCN was led by Jayson Schlenker with 14 (4/12 FG, 6/10 fT).

Wrestling

The Tornados barreled through the Valley City Hi-Liners. Sutton Stearns (114), Ben Wagner (121), Trygg Dahlstrom (127), Owen Iverson (139), Tucker Meierotto (145), Zade Heier (160), and Jacob Ptacek (189) all picked up falls over their opponents while Jaren Nelson picked up the Tech Fall at 133. This helped lead the Tornados to their dominant performance over the Hi-Liners winning 47-27.
