
JAMESTOWN – Concordia St. Paul had a big play from its best men’s basketball player, then a dominant performance by their women, to make the Jamestown Jimmies’ night at home a tough one.
CSP’s men defeated Jamestown 71-69 on Friday at Harold Newman Arena, then the Golden Bears’ women sent the struggling Jimmies to their eighth straight loss with an 83-50 rout.
Men: Concordia St. Paul 71, Jamestown 69
Ben Kopetzki, the NSIC’s leading scorer, knocked down a go-ahead three-pointer with 25 seconds to play for the winning points for CSP (11-6, 6-5 NSIC). Kopetzki scored 26 points with nine rebounds and two assists. His three-pointer was his fifth of the game.
Kopetzki hit one of two free throws with 12 seconds left. Following a Thomas Diew rebound, the Jimmies’ Anthony Walters drove down the middle of the lane, but fell, losing the ball, and Kopetzki stole it away as time ran out, giving Jamestown (9-8, 7-4) just its second loss in their last nine games and their second straight on their home floor. UJ is tied with Northern State for the lead in the NSIC North division.
Jamestown stormed to a 21-8 lead in the first 10:41 of the game as CSP missed 17 of their first 19 shots, but the Golden Bears rallied to within 37-35 at halftime.
CSP took their first lead on a Ryan Johnson layup with 3:29 left at 60-59. Two Diew free throws and a Davis Walker floating jumper gave UJ at 63-60 lead with 2:32 remaining.
At 2:11, two Kopetzki free throws cut the Jimmie lead to one, but Ford Okehi answered with a layup 15 seconds later.
Kopetzki nailed a tying three with 1:38 left to knot the game at 65-65. The Jimmies’ Cole Glasgow followed with a layup with 1:16 on the clock, then Kopetzki hit a layup for a 67-67 tie at 1:02. Walters scored the last Jamestown points on two free throws with 45 seconds to play.
Walters led the Jimmies with 19 points. Glasgow had 12. Owen Hektner, the Jimmies’ second-leading scorer was unavailable due to a lower body injury.
Men: Concordia St. Paul 83, Jamestown 50
CSP was completely dominant in handing Jamestown their eighth straight loss, the Jimmies’ longest losing streak since the 2018-19 season.
Ashley Schuelke scored 10 points in the first quarter as CSP (10-6, 6-5 NSIC) led 20-8 in a first quarter where Jamestown (4-11, 2-9) went 7:36 between points.
In the second quarter, Jamestown had another scoreless stretch of over seven minutes and was outscored 26-6 as CSP led 46-14 at halftime.
With another 26-point quarter, the Golden Bears led 72-29 after three quarters.
Avery Moeller led CSP with a career-high 13 points. Schuelke and Ava Thompson each had 10 points.
Allie Berns scored nine to lead Jamestown. Emily Kurkowski hit two three-pointers for eight points.
