Mayville, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)—Senior Maddox McIlonie scored a career high 29 points for the Carrington boys basketball team, but the Cardinals came up short in a  73-64 loss against the Mayville-Portland-Clifford Galesburg (MPCG) Patriots. The opening quarter would go back and fourth with MPCG scoring the first 5 points before the Cards would take a 7-0 run for a 7-5 lead. the opening frame ended with the Patriots leading 17-16 with 10 lead changes and ties in the quarter. Ultimately the final lead of the night for the Cards was a 16-14 advantage late in the first quarter before MPCG would go on a 7-0 run and lead 21-16 early in the second quarter. McIlonie would connect on a 3-pointer to cut the Patriot lead to 21-19. The Cards would not get any closer as the Patriots the second quarter on a 12-4 run and a 33-21 halftime lead. MPCG would jump out to a game high 16 point lead early in the third quarter at 41-25 before the Cards starting chipping away at the lead. The Cards trailed 49-42 after the third period and got as close as 6 points (50-44) before the Patriots 17-9 run to regain control of the game at 67-53 late in the game. McIlonie scored 19 of his 29 in the second half and also hit 3-3 pointers. Taylen Mehring added 15 points and Tate Wolsky chipped in 9 points for the Cards. Sophomore Bricker Johnson paced the Patriots with 22 points (18 in the second half). Johnson was a thorn in the Cardinals side with his driving baskets in the second half. Noah Djibonon scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half controlling the post. Wyatt Perkins added 11 and Jayd Larson 10 points in the Patriot win. MPCG improved to 5-5 overall (1-3, A-R2) and the Cards dropped to 3-9 overall (0-3, A-R2). The Cards will travel to Hillsboro-Central Valley on Monday night in another A-R2 game versus the Burros at Central Valley in Buxton.
