VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The City of Valley City today announced a mandatory update to its sanitation disposal fees for mattresses, effective February 1, 2026. This change comes as a direct result of new fee structures implemented by the City of Fargo Landfill, where Valley City’s refuse is processed.

Background on the Fee Adjustment: As Valley City operates as a transfer station, all local waste is transported to the Fargo landfill for final disposal. Effective January 1, 2026, the Fargo landfill began assessing a $15.00 surcharge plus tipping fees for every mattress delivered by non-Fargo residents and commercial entities.

To cover these increased operational costs, the City of Valley City will implement the following rate schedule:

  • Standard Mattress Disposal: A $15.00 fee will be applied per mattress when brought out to the transfer station.
  • Curbside/Dumpster Pickup: If a mattress is collected by city staff at a residence, business or dumpster, the owner or landlord will be charged the $15.00 disposal fee plus a “Lift Fee.”

Understanding Lift Fees: The lift fees, originally established on January 21, 2014, under Resolution NO. 1955, remain in effect and are determined by the sanitation staff based on the labor required for the pickup:

  • $25.00: One-person lift.
  • $35.00: Two-person lift.

Implementation Date: While the Fargo landfill changes began on January 1, the City of Valley City will officially begin applying these local rate changes on February 1, 2026.
