CARRINGTON (NewsDakota)- The top of Region 2A in girls basketball features three outstanding teams and perhaps the best player in the division.  So when two of those teams get together, it’s a fair suspicion that a good game is ahead.  And that proved more than true on Tuesday night in Carrington.

A back-and-forth affair between Devils Lake and Carrington came down to the wire as the Cards won their eighth straight game, 62-56 in overtime, inside a jam-packed East Gymnasium.

The game started nervously for both teams, with turnovers aplenty, but Devils Lake (7-6, 4-2) got ten in the first quarter from superstar junior Tylie Brodina for a two-point lead after one.  The second quarter saw Aniston Hoornaert bury a pair of threes for Carrington (10-3, 8-1) that helped cut the lead to 31-28.

The second half turned into a physical war of attrition, but the Cards trailed by five through 24 minutes.  In the fourth, the two teams combined to make just five field goals, and Carrington only two threes, but they went 8/16 from the free throw line in the fourth and took a 52-49 lead into the final 20 seconds before Brodina buried the game-tying three to force overtime.

In the extra session, the Cards scored the first four points followed by back-to-back baskets by the Firebirds to tie it at 56.  But Carrington scored the final six points, including a Marah Johnson triple with fifteen seconds left to extend the lead to 60-56.  Johnson would then sink two foul shots to set the final score.

Carrington are back in action on Thursday night, hosting Kindred, with coverage on KDAK The Cardinal and KDAK The Cardinal on YouTube beginning at around 6:45pm.
