CARRINGTON (NewsDakota)- The old sports saying is that great defense always beats great offense.  And again on Thursday night, that proved exactly right.

Carrington locked down the highest scoring duo in Class A basketball in rolling to their ninth consecutive win, a 59-42 decision over the Kindred Vikings inside the East Gymnasium on Thursday night.

The game started very slowly with the Vikings (10-5) taking a 3-1 lead.  But then Carrington (11-3) swung and did not miss, going on a 24-7 run spanning ten minutes behind great defense and three point shooting by Marah Johnson and Aniston Hoornaert en route to a 34-19 hafltime lead.

The third quarter was no different, as the Cards forced the Vikings out of their traditional 1-3-1 defense while Hoornaert scored five of her team-high 20 points in the quarter and Carrington led 50-26 after three quarters.

Liza Trenbeath, who came in averaging 25 points per game, scored nine of her game-high 22 in the fourth, while sophomore Siera Nipstad, who came in averaging 25 per game, was held to twelve.

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday, hosting Hillsboro/Central Valley with coverage on KDAK The Cardinal on YouTube starting at around 2:15pm.
