DEVILS LAKE (NewsDakota)- Well that was most certainly worth the wait.
In a game postponed from December, the Cardinal girls got a career-high 25 points from Aniston Hoornaert and completed a season sweep of Devils Lake with a 54-47 win at the Devils Lake Sports Center on Monday night to extend their winning streak to eleven.
The game started well for the Firebirds (8-7, 4-3 Region 2A) as Tylie Brodina hit a three and Mia Elsperger scored consecutive baskets for a 7-2 lead. But Carrington went on a 9-0 run behind Hoornaert and saw the lead exchange hands once more before taking full control in the second quarter, as Hoornaert and senior Sienna Topp, who had a career-high eleven for the game, combined for 26 first half points and the Cards (13-3, 10-1 Region 2A) led by seven at the break.
Carrington then made an adjustment to begin the second half, pounding the ball into the paint through sophomore Maara Kutz, who scored nine of her twelve after the break. And it was not just points, as the Cards dominated the rebounding battle, leading to several multi-shot possessions, killing off any hope of a Firebirds comeback. Brodina led Devils Lake with a hard-earned sixteen points in defeat.
The Cardinals are at Thompson on Thursday night with coverage on KDAK The Cardinal beginning at around 6:45pm. With a win, Carrington would be all-but-assured the number one seed in the Region 2A Tournament, which begins on February 23rd in Devils Lake.
