THOMPSON (NewsDakota)- The wait for the first region win of the three-class era for Carrington boys basketball will eventually end, and for a half on Friday night, it seemed that it may be closer than they thought to happening.

But in the end, tonight was not that night.

Gavin Oster and Noah Hippen combined for 28 points as Thompson defeated Carrington 51-36 in a Region 2A matchup on Friday night.

The first quarter saw the Cards (4-12, 0-8 Region 2A) outplay the Tommies (7-7, 6-3 Region 2A) for much of the quarter, and through four ties and three lead changes, Carrington led by one.  In the second though, a flurry of missed shots by Carrington led to Thompson taking the lead thanks to seven points from Hippen and five from Dex Avdem for a 24-20 halftime lead.

The second half began with an 8-2 run by the Tommies and though Maddox McIlonie, who had a game-high 21 points, did what he could offensively, Oster and Hippen combined for eight in the quarter as Thompson took a 39-27 lead to the fourth.  From there, the home team controlled the fourth quarter against a Cardinal team playing their third game in four days.

The Cardinals are back in action Monday night in Kensal, taking on Griggs/Midkota with coverage on KDAK The Cardinal beginning at around 6:45pm.
