JAMESTOWN, N.D. (Valley News Live) – A Jamestown man faces felony charges after police say he tried to lure a 14-year-old girl he met online.

Joseph Scott Nelson, 23, is charged with luring minors by computer and possession of drug paraphernalia. He pleaded not guilty to both charges Feb. 5.

According to court documents, a detective from the Bismarck Police Department contacted Jamestown police in January about an online luring case. The detective had been posing as a 14-year-old girl online and communicating with Nelson through messenger for several months.

Police say Nelson recently moved to Jamestown from Fargo and was possibly homeless. On Feb. 4, the undercover detective told Nelson the fictional 14-year-old would be coming to Jamestown the next day. The plan was for the girl to be dropped off at the Alfred Dickey Library around 10 a.m.

Police say messages between Nelson and the person he believed was a 14-year-old girl included sexually explicit content. In one message, Nelson allegedly asked if she wanted to have sex or watch a movie. Another message described a sexual act.

Detectives arrested Nelson outside the library on Feb. 5 after he arrived at the meeting location. During an interview, Nelson admitted to using methamphetamine hours earlier and talking to someone he believed was 14 years old through messenger, according to the probable cause statement.

Nelson told police he was trying to help the girl and provide support. He denied planning to have sex with her. Police found a smoking device with white residue in Nelson’s pocket after he was booked into the Stutsman County Correctional Center.
