CARRINGTON (NewsDakota)- It was a very special night in Carrington as the Cardinal basketball program honored its’ lone senior player, Sienna Topp, and in the process decided to make it a party.

The Cardinals won their 14th straight game for the first time since the 2016-17 season and clinched their first 1-seed in a Regional Tournament in the three class era with a 54-35 win over the May-Port CG Patriots inside the East Gym on Tuesday night.

Immediately, Carrington (16-3, 13-1 Region 2A) went inside to Maara Kutz, who scored the first six points and after Kiaza Carlson scored for the Patriots (7-12, 1-11 Region 2A), the Cards hit three consecutive triples, part of six different players hitting threes on the night, and the lead was 15-2 in the second quarter en route to a 27-11 halftime lead.

In the second half, Marah Johnson hit three from downtown and Kutz scored seven more points as the lead ballooned to as much as 26 before a late-game run led by Carlson and Hudson Zerface, but it was far too little, far too late.

Carrington will be the #1 seed in the Region 2A Tournament and will play the tournament opener on February 23rd at 3pm against the 8-seed, which will be decided on the 17th when May-Port CG and Harvey/Wells County meet.

Before then, the Cardinals are next in action Friday night at home against the defending state champion Valley City Hi-Liners with coverage beginning at around 6:45pm on KOVC on radio and KDAK The Cardinal on YouTube.
