
RUGBY – Though Jamestown Blue Jays Boys Hockey didn’t see its seed chance with a surprising loss Friday, this still wasn’t the way they wanted to head to the West Region tournament.
Bottineau-Rugby came from two goals down to win on a goal by Cooper Beckman 2:21 into overtime and the Braves upset the Blue Jays 4-3 at the Lumberdome.
Jamestown (13-5-1-1, 12-4-1-1 WDA) clinched the third seed in next week’s tournament with a home win Thursday over Hazen-Beulah. Bottineau-Rugby (5-12-2-2, 4-10-2-2) clinched the seventh seed and will host Hazen-Beulah in a play-in game on Monday.
The Blue Jays scored twice in 44 seconds in the first period for a 2-0 lead. Brady Nenow, who had scored Thursday’s winning goal, tallied at 3:11 from Cole Bullinger. Parker Roelfsema doubled the lead from Ethan Oettle at 3:55.
Bottineau-Rugby had a power play goal from Kaden Bristol at 3:22 of the second period before Jamestown restored a two-goal lead at 3-1 when Blake Foster scored, assisted by Ayden Ness, at 6:16.
Gavin Bartsch brought the Braves within 3-2 with 2:11 left in the second period, then Peyton Getzlaff scored the tying goal with 5:06 left in regulation.
Bottineau-Rugby outshot Jamestown 41-30. Leif Hanson made 37 saves in goal for the Blue Jays.
Jamestown, the third seed in the West Region tournament, will play sixth seed Bismarck in the final quarterfinal game on Thursday, scheduled for 7:30 PM at the VFW Sports Center in Bismarck.
