
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – After a seven-run loss in the season opener Friday, Jamestown Jimmies Baseball was closer Saturday, but still not close enough.
Colorado-Colorado Springs swept a doubleheader from Jamestown 4-3 and 12-11 at Mountain Lion Park.
Game 1: Colorado-Colorado Springs 4, Jamestown 3
The Mountain Lions (5-3) hit Jimmies starter Karver Partlow with two runs in the bottom of the second inning on a bases-loaded walk by Robert Vandegrift and a sacrifice fly by Quinn Medin. UCCS made the lead 3-0 in the fifth. As Cayden Gonzalez hit into an infield fly, Bryce Peterson scored a run.
Jamestown (0-2) made it a one-run game with two runs in the sixth inning. Adrian Warcken hit an RBI triple and Mason Shea scored the second run with a groundout.
An error by the Jimmies’ Jett Nelson allowed the fourth UCCS run to score in the bottom of the sixth.
In the seventh, Mathieu Morin hit his first home run as a Jimmie as a pinch-hitter to lead off the inning. Mountain Lion closer James Harbison then retired the next three Jimmies in order to end the game.
Partlow (0-1) gave up two runs and three hits in four innings, but walked six while striking out two. Ben Bohlmann gave up two runs in two innings. Warcken had two of Jamestown’s six hits.
Game 1: Colorado-Colorado Springs 12, Jamestown 11
Benjamin Pailes hit a game-winning RBI infield hit to score the winning run and cap a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh for UCCS (6-3). The Mountain Lions trailed 9-3 before tying the game with six runs in the sixth. Jamestown (0-3) scored two runs in the seventh to take the lead back.
Peterson started the winning rally against Jimmies closer Bohlmann (0-1) with a one-out walk, then scored on a tying two-run home run by Nolan Oliver. Trevor Dale walked, then Matthew Shipley singled and an error by Jamestown center fielder Dallas Cummings allowed the runners to advance to second and third before Pailes’ winning hit.
Shea started the Jimmies well with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning, but UCCS scored three runs in the second.
Trayson Kostial and Melvin Maldonado slammed back-to-back homers for the Jimmies in the top of the third for a 4-3 UJ lead.
In the fifth, Jamestown scored five. The first scored on an error, then Ben Swennumson hit a three-run double and Shea walked with the bases filled. UJ was up 9-3.
Colorado-Colorado Springs exploded for six runs in the sixth. Oliver walked with the bases loaded, Dale hit a grand slam and Tyler Genrich tied the game with an RBI single.
In the seventh, the lead returned to Jamestown at 11-9 with an RBI single by Maldonado and an RBI double by Nelson.
UJ starter Nic Lewandowski gave up three runs and seven hits in two and two-thirds innings. Jamestown used six pitchers.
The Jimmies will close their series at UCCS on Sunday.
