CASS COUNTY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol will conduct a Move Over enforcement detail at multiple pre-determined locations in Cass and Richland Counties on Friday, February 20.
North Dakota’s Move Over law requires motorists to move over for any stopped vehicle displaying flashing hazard or emergency lights along the interstate system or on multi-lane highways outside city limits. Drivers must move to an adjacent lane when possible and reduce their speed to a safe level before passing. This law applies to all vehicles, including emergency vehicles, motor vehicles, and transportation department vehicles with hazard lights activated.
NDHP Southeast Trooper Miles Rhonemus said, “When drivers move over or slow down, they’re doing more than following the law — they’re protecting real people working just feet from traffic moving at high speeds. The Move Over law gives law enforcement, first responders, and roadside crews a critical safety buffer, and a driver’s responsible choice to slow down and move over can prevent a tragedy.”
The North Dakota Highway Patrol urges drivers to slow down and use caution when passing vehicles stopped on the shoulder with lights activated, including first responders, maintenance vehicles and any vehicle displaying hazard lights. Winter weather creates unpredictable road conditions and extra care is critical to prevent crashes and protect those working on the roadside.
