JAMESTOWN – The final home games of the first season in NCAA Division II for Jamestown Jimmies Basketball provided excitement, but also disappointment.
Minot State swept Jamestown Thursday at Harold Newman Arena, with the Beavers’ women defeating the Jimmies 83-72 and the Minot State men erasing a 15-point second half deficit for an 85-84 win.
Women: Minot State 83, Jamestown 72
Jamestown (7-18, 5-16 NSIC) couldn’t recover from a hot start by Minot State (11-17, 8-13). The Beavers jumped out to a 27-13 lead during the first quarter before a 12-1 run by the Jimmies had them within three in the second quarter. Minot State, one of the country’s most frequent three-point shooting teams, used threes to maintain their lead, hitting 13 in 28 attempts.
Tiyahna Trottier hit two of those treys and led MSU with 26 points, just three short of the career high she established in Minot State’s home win over the Jimmies in December. Taryn Hamling scored 22 points and Maya Aguilar had 16, with each sinking four three-pointers.
Allie Berns was strong again for Jamestown. The freshman recorded her second double-double in the last four games, scoring 22 with 12 rebounds. Haidyn Crockett nailed four three-pointers and tallied 18 points. Jessika Lofstrom scored 15 with eight rebounds.
Men: Minot State 85, Jamestown 84
Deuce Benjamin drove for the winning layup for Minot State (12-15, 9-12 NSIC) with three seconds remaining, completing a comeback from a 57-42 deficit with just under 17 minutes to play.
15 seconds earlier, Anthony Walters, playing in his final home game, drove for a layup that gave Jamestown (13-14, 11-10) an 84-83 lead.
Benjamin’s winning shot completed an astounding second half of shooting from the field for the Beavers. Minot State hit on 19-of-22 field goals in the second half, including their first 17. The last of those 17 straight made shots, a dunk by Isaiah Alexander, tied the game at 77-77 with 4:52 left. Minot State then led 81-77 before a 7-2 run by Jamestown that ended with Walters’ go-ahead layup.
Kiku Parker Jr. led seven Beavers in double-figure scoring with 15 points. Darik Dissette scored 14. There were 11 each from Alexander, Trey Brandt, Carson Yale and Drew Kempel. Benjamin had 10.
Walters had his third 30-point game as a Jimmie, scoring 32 and hitting five three-pointers. Thomas Diew notched 21 points. Ford Okehi had 12, but fouled out late in the second half.
The Jimmies lost despite shooting 63 percent from the floor. Minot State shot 62 percent.
Jamestown can now only share the NSIC North Division title. That would take a win at UMary on Saturday and a Minnesota Duluth loss at MSU Moorhead.
UJ’s final regular season games at UMary on Saturday will have coverage beginning at 1:30 PM on The Voice of the Jimmies, Jamestown 107.1.
