JAMESTOWN – Both Jamestown Blue Jays Basketball teams sought to help themselves as the postseason nears, and both definitely did on Friday.
Jamestown earned a sweep of Williston at the Jamestown Civic Center, with the Blue Jay girls holding off the Coyotes 69-65 and the Jamestown boys scoring their most points in over six years in a 105-94 win.
Girls: Jamestown 69, Williston 65
The Blue Jays (10-10, 8-9 WDA) held on for an important victory, which improved their chances of bypassing the play-in round of the West Region tournament.
But it didn’t come as easily as Jamestown thought it might when the Blue Jays had an 18-point lead during the first half. Jamestown led at the break 41-29, but Williston (10-9, 7-9) fought back.
Adisyn Yunck led Jamestown with 14 points, scoring 12 in the first half. She hit two three-pointers. Mea Ulland tallied 12 points on four three-pointers. Milan Martin had 10. Macey Neumiller scored nine. Claire Marker had eight points, 12 rebounds and two blocked shots.
Averi Austreim paced Williston with 23 points. Mekiah Klumker scored 17 and Alex Austreim had 15.
Entering Saturday, the Blue Jays led Williston by a half-game for sixth place in the WDA standings.
Boys: Jamestown 105, Williston 94
At least for one night, Jamestown (5-15, 3-14 WDA) stopped some frustration. The Blue Jays broke a five-game losing streak and recorded the program’s highest point total since 2019.
In his final regular season home game, Edison Walters put on quite a performance, scoring 32 points to match a career high. Eric Van Berkom scored 15 with seven rebounds. Gradin Thorlakson scored 14 with three three-pointers. 10 of his points came in the game’s first five minutes.
For Williston (3-16, 2-14), Justin Irgens scored 24 points.
The 105 points for Jamestown marked the first time in three years that a Blue Jay boys team scored over 100 points in a game. It’s the most points that Jamestown has scored since a 111-64 home win over St. Mary’s on December 10, 2019.
Through Friday, Jamestown shared eighth place in the WDA with Minot North.
Both Jamestown teams will finish their regular seasons Tuesday at Dickinson. Coverage will begin at around 6:30 PM on The Voice of the Blue Jays, Jamestown 107.1.
