Valley City State 78, Carroll 75 (OT)
MOORHEAD, Minn. — Valley City State Vikings pulled off a statement win Tuesday, upsetting No. 25 Carroll College Saints 78-75 in overtime.
Valley City State opened the game on a 7-0 run, sparked by Ellie Braaten, JayCee Richter and Tiyana Schwinghammer. The Vikings maintained a small cushion throughout the first quarter and took a 17-11 lead after Richter converted two free throws late in the frame.
The Vikings built momentum in the second quarter, opening on a 10-2 run to extend the lead to 29-13 following a Schwinghammer 3-pointer and a layup. Carroll responded late in the half, trimming the deficit, but Liz Lukken’s basket at the buzzer sent Valley City State into halftime with a 39-28 advantage.
Carroll continued to chip away in the third quarter, cutting the margin to four early. Schwinghammer and Richter answered with timely 3-pointers, helping the Vikings weather the surge and take a 59-51 lead into the fourth.
The Saints tied the game at 63-63 midway through the fourth quarter and knotted it again at 69-69 with 46 seconds remaining to force overtime.
Abby Aslesen scored first in the extra period, and Valley City State never trailed, with Richter capinthe win with a late three-point play.
Richter led the Vikings with 19 points, while Schwinghammer added 18. Valley City State shot 47.5% from the field and went 16 of 19 from the free-throw line.
Men’s Basketball
Carroll 95, Valley City State 77
Carroll College Saints spoiled the sweep, racing past Valley City State Vikings 95-77 behind a blistering first-half performance.
Isaiah Crane poured in 19 first-half points as Carroll’s up-tempo offense generated a steady stream of open looks. The Saints shot 18 of 36 from the field in the opening half, including 6 of 12 from 3-point range.
Valley City State struggled offensively in the first half, scoring just 24 points and shooting 9 of 29 from the floor. The Vikings found their rhythm after the break, shooting 17 of 29 in the second half, but were unable to slow Carroll defensively. The Saints matched the Vikings’ efficiency, going 17 of 31 from the field in the final 20 minutes to seal the win.
JR Cison and Logan (last name) led Valley City State with 13 points apiece, while Kaleb Larson and Alex Lester added 12 each.
The Vikings return to action Saturday with a doubleheader against Rocky Mountain College Battlin’ Bears beginning at 3 p.m.
