DEVILS LAKE (NewsDakota)- The Carrington Cardinals entered Thursday night on an eighteen game winning streak, which included the second of their two wins over Thompson this season, while the Tommies were seeking their second regional title in three years.
And the Tommies played their absolute best game.
Addy Sage and Kya Hurst scored a combined 42 points and the second-seeded Tommies defeated the top-seeded Cardinals 60-38 on Thursday night to advance to the state tournament in Jamestown.
Thompson (21-3) began well with Hurst scoring six of the first nine and the Tommies led 9-3. But Carrington (20-4) responded with a 10-2 run to take the lead after one at 13-11. The second quarter, however, was decisive, as Hurst and Sage combined for eighteen in the first half and Carrington did not hit a three in the half in trailing 29-18.
The third quarter saw Thompson extend the lead to as much as 43-24 before the Cards went on a 7-0 run to close to within twelve at the end of the third at 43-31. But Sage buried three more triples in the fourth and the result was never in doubt.
After the game, Aniston Hoornaert, Maara Kutz, and Marah Johnson were named all-region and Coach Andy Braaten was named Region 2A Coach of the Year.
Carrington will face Valley City in a state qualifier on Saturday at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse in Mayville with coverage on KDAK The Cardinal & KOVC beginning at 2:45pm.
