FARGO – There was the excitement of a first state tournament appearance for Jamestown Blue Jays Boys Hockey in three years, but there also was the disappointment of another quarterfinal loss.
Caden Ulmer scored a hat trick Thursday as Grand Forks Red River stopped Jamestown 5-1 in the quarterfinal round of the NDHSAA Boys State Hockey Tournament at Scheels Arena.
Ulmer scored the game’s first goal for Red River (19-5-0-1) on the power play 1:26 into the first period.
Parker Roelfsma, who had missed the West Region state qualifying win last Saturday over Mandan for Jamestown (15-6-1-2) with an injury, evened the game at 11:50 of the first period.
Kale Gruenberg and Ulmer scored in the second period for Red River, and Ulmer and Mason Brenno scored in the third period.
Red River mainly dominated the game, with 41 shots to Jamestown’s seven.
The Blue Jays’ misfortune in state quarterfinal games continued. Jamestown has now lost eight straight quarterfinal games, having last won one in 1996.
On Friday, Jamestown will meet Minot United in a consolation semifinal at Farmers Union Insurance Arena. Coverage will begin at around 10:45 AM on The Voice of the Blue Jays, Jamestown 107.1.
