FARGO – Despite an incredible performance by goalie Leif Hanson, Jamestown Blue Jays Boys Hockey lost the consolation championship game at the state tournament Saturday in overtime to Fargo Shanley 2-1 at Farmers Union Insurance Arena.
Hanson kicked out 39 of the 41 shots he faced as Jamestown was outshot 41-28.
The Jays held a 1-0 lead after two periods, thanks to a John Belzer short handed goal at the 13:43 mark of period two. Belzer connected for his 12th of the season with assists to Braxton Burkett, his team leading 23rd, and Parker Roelfsema, his 15th.
Deacons Ryan Olsonawski swooped and scored on a backhander 40 seconds into period three to knot the game at one.
Shanley winger Jordan Wright ended the game 5:40 into overtime with a wrister top shelf glove side.
Shanley was playing in its first state tournament since 1989 and ends the season with the fifth place trophy and a record of 13-13-1.
The Jays wrapped up the season at 16-7-1-2.
