MAYVILLE (NewsDakota)- Sometimes in sports, it’s all about being in the right spot at the right time. And for Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier, on Saturday Mazie Tjernlund was in the perfect spot.
The junior guard scored off an offensive rebound with 0.5 seconds left as the Rebels advanced to the state tournament in Minot with a 53-52 win over the Griggs-Midkota Titans on Saturday at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.
The first quarter was a harbinger of things to come, as the two teams went back and forth with the Titans (18-8) taking a 10-9 lead through one behind six points from senior Kelsey Johnson, who surpassed 1,000 points on Thursday night. The back and forth continued in the second until the Rebels (14-12) took the lead on a buzzer beating three by Elli Lloyd for a 20-18 advantage at the break.
In the third quarter, the Rebels took their largest lead of the game at 32-25, but the Titans answered immediately with an 11-1 run to take a 36-33 lead. It was part of a 25 point quarter for Griggs-Midkota. The Rebels also lost leading scorer Jaelyn Bertsch in the quarter, but they buckled down for the final frame, which featured three ties and four lead changes, and after two free throws gave the Titans the lead, Betsy Huber missed a bad-angle jumper, but the ball bounced to Tjernlund, who laid it back in to send her team to the Minot State Dome.
The Rebels were seeded seventh and will take on defending champion Benson County on Thursday at 1pm in the MSU Dome in the first state quarterfinal.
