TITUSVILLE, FL – A comeback win followed by a loss began spring break for Jamestown Jimmies Softball.
In their first two games in the Space Coast Games at the USSSA Space Coast Complex, Jamestown rallied from two runs down, then held on to defeat Michigan-Dearborn 7-6, then lost 7-2 to Walsh University.
Jamestown 7, Michigan-Dearborn 6
Through four innings, Jamestown (11-3) managed five walks, but only one hit and no runs against pitchers Katelyn Postuma and Brooklyn Jones for Michigan-Dearborn (2-3), who built a 2-0 lead.
But in the fifth inning, UJ rallied. Maddie Spaeth’s first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left center, tied the game at 2-2. Amanda Burch hit a go-ahead single later in the inning and Tori Olson added another RBI single and Jamestown was up 4-2.
The Jimmies added three more runs in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Lauren Weigel and a two-run single by Madelyn Webb.
As it turned out, Jamestown needed all those runs because Michigan-Dearborn rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh, with Kaleigh McClellan’s two-out two-run single bringing the Wolverines within 7-6. Maddie Hairgrove struck out the next batter, Kendyl Gearhart, to end the game.
Jamestown starter Hope Ransome (3-3) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings.
Walsh 7, Jamestown 2
Walsh (2-0) roughed up Jamestown starter Abby Blair, scoring all their runs in the first three innings. Jamestown was down 4-0 before Spaeth brought in a run with a ground ball in the third inning for the Jimmies (11-4). Kasydi Bennett doubled in the other run for UJ in the seventh.
Blair (5-1) gave up seven runs (two earned) in two and two-thirds innings with eight hits.
The Jimmies will continue play in the Space Coast Games on Monday with action against Southern New Hampshire and Roosevelt.
